DIY: Changing Area

Things are Changing: One of the many (MANY) things that changed around our house with the coming of the boy was the need for a changing table.  We live in a ’20s bungalow and have a lot of vintage furniture, so when we started looking at changing tables in stores we were a bit horrified by not only the cost, but by how ugly they were.

Old is the new “new”: After a lot of consideration we decided just o buy an old dresser and screw the changing pad on top of it.  This not only served as our changing table, but also to store all of his clothes and assorted fabric needs.  I then added a shell with galvanized buckets (from Lowe’s) that I screwed down to securely hold our cloth diapers, creams, wipes and misc. implements and toys.  I also added a soft mirror to the bottom that helps keep him occupied during changes.

The Bottom Line: We found this dresser on Craigslist for $65, and while it’s not a great antique, it’s acceptable for what we needed and I didn’t feel bad about screwing the changing pad into it.  For that same price we couldn’t have gotten much else of this size (even at Ikea) and the look goes with the rest of the vintage feel in our bathroom.
